What Is An Intercooler?

The intercooler is an important component in the turbocharger system of a car. It is usually only seen in cars with superchargers installed.

It is a supporting part of the turbocharger and is usually made of aluminum alloy. Its main function is to reduce the intake temperature of the engine.

When the turbocharger engine is working, the air is compressed and the temperature rises. High-temperature air entering the engine will cause the oxygen density to decrease, affecting the charging efficiency. It may also cause engine knock and other faults, increase fuel consumption and pollution. The intercooler can solve these problems.

Intercoolers are divided into air-cooled and water-cooled according to the cooling medium. The air-cooled intercooler is cooled by the wind and the suction fan when the vehicle is driving. For example, it is installed in front of the engine together with the radiator. The water-cooled type has the advantage of high constant temperature like Toyota Mingji 3SGTE, but the cooling range is not as good as the air-cooled type, so the air-cooled type is the mainstream.

The maintenance of the intercooler is very important. When cleaning the outside, it cannot be flushed obliquely. Use a water gun with appropriate pressure to flush vertically to prevent damage. The inside should also be cleaned and checked regularly to prevent the pipes from being blocked by dirt.
